Rights, risk and restraint

- an introduction to a human rights approach to implementing positive behaviour support

29 September 2010, Midlands

We often struggle to understand the reasons why people use behaviours that challenge as a means of communication. This event will introduce the concept of Trauma informed care and look at how this model can be developed in services for people who have learning disabilities. The model proposes that trauma may be a factor in the onset of behaviours that challenge, but also that the response of services and supports can make things worse by delivering interventions that are in themselves traumatic including restrictive physical interventions and seclusion.

The aims of the event are:

- to explore the link between human rights and positive behaviour support
- to define and recognise restrictive practices
- to discuss how a human rights framework provides principles for practice
- to offer practical steps to implementation

Who should attend?

The day is aimed at practitioners, teachers, support workers, case managers and services managers who have a professional interest in supporting children, young people and adults across a variety of settings who are described as challenging.

Continuous Professional Development

This event has been CPD certified. Attendance will allow you to gain CPD points towards your Continuous Professional Development requirements.
