Conference: 'Challenges for the workforce: choice, control and self-directed support'

8 December 2008, Manchester Conference Centre, Manchester

With the growth of individual budgets and direct payments, people with learning disabilities and their families will rightly have more choice and control over the support they receive and how they access it. These changes in how social care is organised will have a major impact on the workforce that supports people with learning disabilities. Not only will support workers, managers and commissioners need to work differently, but a variety of new roles will be needed including personal assistants, job coaches and brokers.

The challenge for the future will be for both individuals and organisations to match the new opportunities with staff who possess or can develop the skills and flexibility required. This will be in a framework where workers will be recruited, trained and managed in different ways by individuals, families as well as existing and new types of providers.

This conference looks specifically at how these changes will impact on the current workforce, focussing on people with learning disabilities and service provision within the learning disability sector. The conference will enable delegates to understand some of the current experiences and future implications. With real life scenarios, practical solutions and ideas to move forward with workforce changes, this conference will advise, inform and inspire.
