Why does she/he need an advocate? Understanding independent advocacy

NEW EVENT

Advocacy means 'to speak up for someone or to support them to speak up for themselves'. It is a process of several activities that seeks to challenge social exclusion, especially where this leads , to a loss of rights, and in some situations, to abuse.

This event gives perspective on the history of advocacy showing why it is important to people with a learning disability. It will give learners the opportunity to reflect on the role of an advocate and to understand what are the possibilities and challenges. The day will identify ways in which current legislation, and the forthcoming national advocacy qualification promote the importance supporting people to have a voice of their own to influence the support they receive.

Who for

Anyone who supports people with a learning disability, direct care staff and advocates.

Discount

We can offer a discounted rate for a person with a learning disability or ASD; family carer or enabler; unwaged; small voluntary organisation (ie. an organisation working in the learning disability field with no more than five paid members of staff).

"But she can't tell you what she wants" - non instructed advocacy

NEW EVENT

Non instructed advocacy looks at practical ways to supporting people to have a voice even when they are unable to direct the advocacy themselves

This event will enable participants to look at the complex issue of how to advocate for people with a learning disability who have high support needs and may not communicate using words. In addition, they may have significant barriers to communication because of complex physical, health or emotional needs and require lots of extra support. It could also include people with sensory impairments or those with mental illness or on the autistic spectrum.

The event offers a 'toolbox' of ideas and practical suggestions to make sure people with high support needs are not only heard but taken seriously.

Who for

Anyone wanting a greater understanding of 'non-instructed' advocacy or advocacy for those with high individual support needs. This would include advocates and be particularly helpful for Independent Mental Capacity or Independent Mental Health Advocates.

Understanding the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and its implications

This day gives a more 'in-depth' perspective of how the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the Code of Practice impacts upon the role of the worker. It will give you the opportunity to reflect on your role in assessing someone's capacity to make decisions and in implementing the Mental Capacity Act. It aims to ensure that staff feel confident and competent in supporting people with learning disabilities throughout the decision-making process or acting in the 'best interests' of someone who lacks capacity.

Who for

Staff from all disciplines who work with or support people with learning disabilities and their families.

Person centred storytelling

Sharing experiences with other people is a vital human acitivity, which helps us to form our identity, make friends, make decisions, and function independently. We recall what happens to us in the form of a narrative or story, and save these up to tell other people. However, it is a challenging activity for people who have difficulties with memory and with communication.

This event aims to teach participants how to build effective narratives of everyday life with people who have severe and profound learning disabilities. Activities will include how to create experiences that are interesting and memorable, how to record events through multimedia and sensory scrapbooks, and how to support people in storytelling.

Who for

Anyone who works with and supports children and adults with a learning disability.

Discount

We can offer a discounted rate for a person with a learning disability or ASD; family carer or enabler; unwaged; small voluntary organisation (ie. an organisation working in the learning disability field with no more than five paid members of staff).

Supporting people with a learning disability to make choices and decisions in their lives

The Government White Papers 'Valuing People Now' and 'Our health, our care, our say' emphasise that people want to have more control over their lives and to be able to make real choices about the things that matter most to them.

This event will give participants the opportunity to explore how people with a learning disability can be supported to take more control of their own lives. This will include supporting people in making simple everyday decisions, such as what to eat and what to wear as well as being involved in bigger decisions such as the recruitment of staff and managing their own finances. The day will also address how current policy, legislation and 'best practice' guidance can support people to maintain the balance between choice and risk and promote an understanding of the rights of people with a learning disability.
