Activities for communication for people with profound learning disabilities

Often supporters find it hard to understand communication that does not involve speech or to know where to start to engage individuals with PMLD in activities and events. Particularly, when these individuals have difficulties, not only in understanding but also seeing, hearing and moving about. By the end of the day participants should be able to:

- Communicate more effectively with individuals with PMLD
- Use a range of activities as contexts for communicating, eg stories, social activities, sensory experiences, art and music
- Have fun with the individuals they work with

Safeguarding Adults: Getting it right

Safeguarding vulnerable adults from abuse and exploitation is one of the key responsibilities of care and support staff. As services become increasingly focused on promoting independence, it is important that staff are clear about their role in enabling choice, whilst also meeting their responsibilities within Safeguarding Adult procedures. The event focuses on some key questions:-

- Why does abuse and neglect occur?
- What might constitute abuse?
- What should staff do if they become aware of alleged abuse and neglect?

Who for

Direct care and support staff working with people with learning disabilities (though the course will also be of benefit to staff working with other groups of people).

Person centred quality outcomes and transition

NEW EVENT

Ensuring that you people have a voice and that their dreams and aspirations are met is a fundamental right for all young people. 'Every child matters' identifies 5 specific positive outcomes for all disabled young people and this event will explore how these can be achieved through multi-disciplinary working and putting the young person and their family at the centre. This event will look at:

- Personal positive experiences of young people, families and teachers who have used person centred quality outcome measures
- Person centred thinking tools that can be intergrated into Year 9 reviews
- Ideas for making reviews more inclusive
- Planning for the young person's future - achieving a quality of life

This event will demonstrate that linking person centred approaches to Year 9 reviews and to be able to measure individual outcomes makes a huge difference to the young person, their family and professionals who support them.

Who for

Young people with learning disabilities, family carers, multi-disciplinary staff from health, social care and education, commissioners and Connexions.

Alcohol and illicit drug misuse in people with learning disabilities - research, practice and service development

NEW EVENT

Despite a growing awareness and increase in the numbers of people with learning disabilities who misuse alcohol and illicit drugs, there continues to be limited recognition from policy makers, commissioners and service providers to this fact.
Whilst prevalence may appear to be low, the impact for the individual, their families and services can be huge, including higher risk taking behaviour, links to offending, possible aggression, injury requiring A&E treatment and being more vulnerable and open to abuse from others.

The aim of this event is to raise the awareness of this important issue, understand how person centred thinking tools can be used to support individuals and explore positive treatment and therapy interventions, as well as the benefits of social skills training and individual education. At the end of the event participants will have a greater understanding of the issues that face people with learning disabilities and their families, have examples of good practice that can be implemented locally and be able to use tools and methods that focus on person centred support.

Who for

People with learning disabilities, family carers and supporters, community nurses, drug and alcohol teams, anyone working in the criminal justice system. Commissioners, community development workers and voluntary groups.

Discount

We can offer a discounted rate for a person with a learning disability or ASD; family carer or enabler; unwaged; small voluntary organisation (ie. an organisation working in the learning disability field with no more than five paid members of staff).
