Learning from history

NEW EVENT

This event will be of interest to professionals working within a range of service settings but particularly those in services for adults who have learning disabilities.

The day highlights the real life experience of a person with learning disability, through his own experience and in his words. Delegates will have the opportunity to explore the historical aspects of policy and legislation, the importance of peoples' experiences and to discuss what makes life "good" for people now and in the future.

- Life history of a service user
- Recent history of service development, government policy and legislation in the context of real life experiences
- What makes a difference to people and their quality of life
- How quality life outcomes are measured by services

A range of professionals, in particular those working within or commissioning services for adults with learning disabilities who exhibit challenging behaviour.

Preventing and managing challenging behaviour

NEW EVENT

This event will explore how to prevent challenging behaviour and provide effective support of individuals with learning disabilities and/or autism. The day will explore policy environmental and organisational issues, as well as focussing on the process for supporting individual people. By the end of the day, participants will have gained an understanding of the key issues relating to the management of challenging behaviour and be able to set these in the context of their own practice and their responsibilities in the workplace.

Anyone who works in services supporting children and adults with learning disabilities who present challenging behaviour.

Positive handling: policy and practice in schools and services for children and young people

NEW EVENT

This event will enable head teachers, educational psychologists, senior support workers, service managers and those working in mainstream and specialist teams to explore key issues about positive handling. The focus of the day will be defining practice, implementing policy, assessing risk and auditing the use of restrictive physical interventions. It will be expected that participants have at least completed an introductory session on Challenging Behaviour.

Anyone working with children and young people, education personnel, behaviour support teams, psychologists, service managers and researchers.

Physical Interventions: a policy framework

NEW EVENT

This event will explore the issues relating to the development of organisational policy on the use of restrictive interventions. The day will explore definitions, use of restrictive physical interventions, scope of policy, health and safety issues and relevance to organisational risk assessment. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss a framework for policy development, and how to monitor, review and evaluate such a policy.

This event will be beneficial to practitioners from a variety of services, who are developing new policies in line with national guidance.

Advanced practitioner: challenging behaviour and autistic spectrum disorder

NEW EVENT

This event is aimed at experienced practitioners who wish to further their knowledge in the area of understanding challenging behaviour and autism. It will explore behaviours commonly associated with autistic spectrum disorder, and explore possible reasons for the behaviour based on current theories and research. This event is designed to encourage debate and discussion which will enable participants to reflect on their practice, exchange views and engage in problem solving sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in a case study workshop.

Experienced professionals working in a range of service settings and supporting individuals who have autism and exhibit associated behaviours.

Advanced practitioner - understanding challenging behaviour (2 days)

For those who wish to further develop their knowledge in the area of understanding challenging behaviour and behaviour support planning. The 2 days will cover risk management, policies, legal framework and practice development and ethics in Physical Interventions.
