Principles of positive behaviour support

This event is aimed at professionals who would like to understand the principles of positive behaviour support and encourage the development and implementation of positive behaviour support approaches into their work. This approach focuses on behavioural change, not reduction and improving the quality of people's lives.

The day will include:

- Overview and identification of the aspects of socially invalid behaviour
- An introduction to the principles of positive behaviour support
- An overview of a framework for the application of PBS into services
- Information on individual behaviour assessment and support planning

Who for

Anyone who works in or has an interest in this area and has little or no knowledge of positive behaviour support as an approach.

Principles for reporting and recording (behaviour support)

Accurate reporting and recording in relation to behaviour support is becoming increasingly important. This event will explore the common mistakes and omissions made within organisations and how to overcome them.

Delegates will look at how to identify the factors that will increase good reporting, recording and identify how good data can be used within a framework of positive behaviour support. Good reporting and recording can help to reduce reliance on aversive practices and increase opportunities for the development of proactive approaches.

The day will include:

- To increase awareness of the importance of reporting and recording
- To understand how it can be used to inform practice
- To understand how to interpret and use data to change practice
- To be able to develop bespoke data collection tools

Who for

Anyone who has responsibility for the reporting and recording of behaviour challenges, interventions and support within schools or services.

Preventing and managing challenging behaviour

This event will explore how to prevent challenging behaviour and provide effective support of individuals with learning disabilities and/or autism. The day will explore policy environmental and organisational issues, as well as focussing on the process for supporting individual people. By the end of the day, participants will have gained an understanding of the key issues relating to the management of challenging behaviour and be able to set these in the context of their own practice and their responsibilities in the workplace.

Anyone who works in services supporting children and adults with learning disabilities who present challenging behaviour.

Risk assessment and challenging behaviour

This level 4 event is aimed at practitioners who have an understanding of behaviour support and those who have responsibility for health and safety within organisations/services.

The event will explore issues pertinent to managing risk in relation to behaviour and identify how this may differ to other risk assessments undertaken. The day will encourage delegates to discuss how behaviour can have an impact, together with the factors which can increase risk. It will promote approaches of positive behaviour support as part of an overall framework for reducing risk in services as a result of behaviour that may be difficult to manage.

The day will include:

- Understanding risk in a behavioural context
- Understanding the environmental impact on levels of risk
- Exploring how organisational approaches may reduce risk
- Understanding individual risk indicators
- Identifying person centred solutions to reducing risk
- Appreciating the importance of reporting and recording

Managers, team leaders, teachers and those with responsibility for health and safety within organisations.

Advanced practitioner: challenging behaviour and autistic spectrum disorder

This event is aimed at experienced practitioners who wish to further their knowledge in the area of understanding challenging behaviour and autism. It will explore behaviours commonly associated with autistic spectrum disorder, and explore possible reasons for the behaviour based on current theories and research. This event is designed to encourage debate and discussion which will enable participants to reflect on their practice, exchange views and engage in problem solving sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in a case study workshop.

Experienced professionals working in a range of service settings and supporting individuals who have autism and exhibit associated behaviours.

Physical interventions: a policy framework

To include the publication Physical Interventions: a policy framework - 2nd edition)

This event will explore the issues relating to the development of organisational policy on the use of restrictive interventions. The day will explore definitions, use of restrictive physical interventions, scope of policy, health and safety issues and relevance to organisational risk assessment. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss a framework for policy development, and how to monitor, review and evaluate such a policy.

This event will be beneficial to practitioners from a variety of services, who are developing new policies in line with national guidance.
